Year Overview
Sixth grade is a transition year for students
from having one teacher to switching classes/teachers
for math, social studies, and science. It is a year for
sixth graders to grow in responsibility and respect.
I teach language arts to my homeroom and
science to all 6th grade students. A sampling of the reading
program includes reading short stories, class novels,
and poems; participating in group discussions about stories;
and independently reading books for literature reviews.
Crispin and Number the Stars are two examples of novels
that will be studied. Skills such as reading comprehension,
summarizing, using context clues, understanding character
development, cause and effect, and figurative language
are all practiced. In writing, the Empowering Writers
program guides our work in expository and persuasive writing.
This program helps the students break down the steps and
skills of good writing in a tangible and organized fashion.
For science, laboratories and other hands-on
or inquiry activities are used to help students better
understand our world. Safety in the lab is very important
in 6th grade as this is the first year students participate
in formal laboratory activities. We explore topics in
ecology, chemistry, and geology. Chemistry is a highlight
for students when we study physical and chemical reactions
and acids and bases. Atoms, elements, and the periodic
table help students understand of what everything in our
world is made.
