| Welcome
to Third Grade
Third grade is my favorite year.
This year students will work on expanding their narrative
writing skills and develop expository writing. They
will develop their reading skills, reading as a whole
class, in small groups and spending increasing time
reading on their own. As the year goes on they will
read more challenging chapter books, as well as non-fiction
materials about science and other subjects.
This year we will be starting a new math program which
will contain many home connections for extension and
extra practice.
We study 4 science units beginning with physical science,
followed by bones and muscles, the solar system and
classification, not necessarily in that order, We will
also study other topics as they come up, and spend time
out on the nature trail each week as the weather and
schedule permits.
In social studies we will study Connecticut and Communities.
We will visit Old Sturbridge Village in the spring and
will take part in the Mapps program beginning in the
fall and ending in the spring. The Mapps program matches
our class with a class from Windham and includes letter
writing between pen-pals and several field trips, cumulating
with an orienteering experience in the spring.
Health topics include the human body, physical and emotional
safety, and states of mind.
Students will begin practicing cursive writing in the
winter and use it increasingly as their skills improve.

Extra
Help
I am available to give extra help or extension after
school from 3:30- 4:30 on Thursdays. To stay after,
students must bring in a note that they will stay on
that day and that they will be picked up promptly at
4:30.

Reading
at Home
Students are asked to read at home and keep a reading
journal. They should read for at least 20 minutes a
day, at least 3 times a week and summarize what they
read in their reading journals. Reading journals will
be due once a week. Books to read at home may be checked
out from the school library or borrowed from the classroom
as needed. Book orders are also an easy way to find
new books to read.

Homework
Policy
Students will be assigned homework 3-4 days a week.
This is in addition to weekly reading journal assignments.
Unless otherwise noted, all homework assignments are
due on the following day. I understand that schedules
are busy and in the case where there is no time to do
homework on a given night, students who bring in a note
from a parent to that effect can turn in homework assignments
later without penalty. Otherwise, unfinished assignments
are to be finished during study.

Grading Policy
Third grade is the first year where students will be
receiving letter grades. Students grades are based on
a average of daily work and test and quiz grades in each
subject.
