PRESCHOOL SCREENING:
A preschool screening of children who are 3
- 4 years of age occurs in the spring of each year. The preschool
teachers and the speech/language pathologist invite children
to participate in a variety of activities which help to evaluate
the child's age appropriate skills in the areas of speech,
language, hearing, motor, and cognitive skills. In addition
to the formal screening, the parents of the preschool age
children are requested to complete a questionnaire that also
measures a child's development. If concerns arise during the
preschool screening regarding a child's development in the
area of speech and language the parent of the child will be
alerted to this concern and either a re-screening at a future
date will be recommended or a further evaluation of the child
will be suggested. Once the child enters the preschool program
the progress of the child will be monitored and a variety
of strategies will be implemented to encourage the child's
acquisition of age appropriate skills. If the child's skills
do not reflect improvements then a PPT (Planning and Placement
Team) meeting will be recommended with the parents of the
child to request their permission to further assess the child
and to potentially plan an IEP(Individual Educational Plan).
After an evaluation is completed by the appropriate staff
an IEP will be developed which addresses those areas of concern
and these recommendations will be presented to the parent/parents
for their approval at a subsequent PPT meeting. Then the SLP
will set up a schedule to meet with the child during the preschool
day and will implement the program of the child which typically
lasts one year in length.
